Learning to drive is more than just operating a car — it’s about mastering safety, awareness, and control on every road. The Essential Driver Training (EDT) program, designed by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), consists of 12 one-hour lessons. Each session builds on the last, helping learners become confident, responsible, and test-ready drivers in Tallaght and nearby areas like Drimnagh, Walkinstown, and Crumlin.
The 12 EDT driving lessons bring structure and discipline to your learning process. In addition, they emphasize safety, awareness, and consistent improvement. As a result, many students in Tallaght, Firhouse, and Citywest complete the full EDT program and now drive confidently across Dublin.
The RSA requires all learner drivers in Ireland to complete 12 EDT sessions before booking a driving test. Therefore, Templeogue Driving School helps you meet this requirement efficiently while improving your driving confidence.
Since April 4th, 2011, every learner driver must complete the 12 EDT lessons before applying for their driving test. Our program suits all experience levels — from beginners to those returning to driving after a break. Each lesson helps you develop essential skills, confidence, and awareness for everyday driving.
Each of the 12 lessons covers vital driving skills and techniques:
Car Controls and Safety Checks – Learn how to manage car functions and perform vital safety checks.
Correct Positioning – Understand proper seating and steering alignment for control and comfort.
Changing Direction – Practice safe, smooth turning and maneuvering.
Progression Management – Control speed and distance effectively.
Advanced Positioning – Handle complex junctions and multi-lane roads confidently.
Anticipation and Reaction – Predict hazards and react safely.
Sharing the Road – Develop awareness of pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists.
Driving Safely Through Traffic – Build confidence in busier road conditions.
Advanced Direction Change – Master lane discipline and turn accuracy.
Speed Management – Maintain control at varying speeds.
Driving Calmly – Manage nerves and maintain focus.
Night Driving – Learn the techniques needed for safe, low-visibility driving.
Your progress is recorded in the RSA EDT logbook. After each lesson, your instructor provides feedback and signs your logbook, confirming completion.
This record is then uploaded to the RSA system — a necessary step before booking your driving test.
Completing the full EDT program ensures you’re ready for your Irish driving test in Tallaght, Dublin. Moreover, our instructors provide pre-test lessons that fine-tune your skills and boost your confidence before test day.
